The filmmaker John Hillcoat, who’s currently developing an adaptation of Blood Meridian, said that there was a consensus, among McCarthy’s support system, that completing The Passenger was a top priority.

Any other kind of project or pitch should wait. 

It’s part of why he never got around to Blood Meridian, why Hillcoat never encouraged it.

But there was one other story, Hillcoat said, that McCarthy was brainstorming.

“He talked about it several times, [and] wasn’t sure if it was a movie or a novel, but he had the whole first scene: These people on horseback riding on a beach, where the horses are going into the water…It was beautifully described [through conversation] in a way that I could never do justice. But basically: 

Hillcoat describes the riders walking their horses out a short distance into the ocean, walking parallel with the shore. Then:
